Guidelines
To ensure the longevity of your glass units, it’s important to follow 
best practice glazing techniques and to use materials that are 
high-quality and compatible with the glazing or window bedding 
process. Poor glazing practices and the use of unsuitable materials 
can cause these units to fail prematurely.
The primary culprits behind these failures include:
∙Units with edges exposed to water.
∙Thermal breakage due to expansion from
solar energy absorption.
∙Insufficient clearances within the glazing system.
The primary purpose of glazing materials is to achieve and 
maintain a flexible, watertight seal while allowing for adequate 
clearances during periods of expansion and contraction. When 
glazing and bedding insulating glass units, the objectives are:
∙Preventing moisture infiltration into the interior of the unit.
∙Avoiding moisture accumulation within the sash.
∙Preventing the loss of heat or conditioned air through the sash
and insulating unit.
∙Providing cushioning to the unit within the sash to prevent direct
glass-to-metal contact.
By addressing these considerations and following proper glazing 
practices with compatible materials, you can significantly enhance 
the longevity and performance of your insulating glass units.
Here are some additional crucial points to ensure the long life of 
an insulating glass unit:
∙Remove Labels: Right after placing the unit, promptly remove any
paper labels present. Failing to do so could lead to glass staining
or even thermal breakage. Also, be cautious about applying
stickers or decals as they may cause breakage.
∙Glazing Orientation: Always glaze tinted or reflective glass with
the coated side facing the exterior of the building. Follow the
manufacturer’s instructions for guidance.
∙Check Framing Members: Ensure that the framing members
holding the glass are plumb (vertically straight) and square
(forming right angles).
∙Avoid Leaning: When handling insulating glass units, avoid
leaning them at angles other than 90 degrees from their base
support. Tilting them improperly may lead to shearing of the two
glass panes.
∙Avoid Heat Outlets: Do not install units directly over heat outlets,
especially behind shades, blinds, or closed draperies. Entrapped
hot air can cause thermal breakage.
