Dew Point
The “dew point” is the temperature 
at which air becomes saturated with 
moisture, causing water vapor to condense 
into liquid water or dew.
Dual Glazing 
“Dual glazing” is two glass panels with an 
air gap, offering insulation against heat 
loss and noise.
Durometer 
A machine used to measure the shore 
hardness of materials like neoprene.
Elasticity
Elasticity is the material’s capacity to 
regain its original form or state after 
deformation. It is also known as ‘Memory’ 
or ‘Recovery.’
Elastomer
A rubbery material that quickly reverts 
to nearly its original dimensions after 
undergoing significant deformation.
Elongation 
The ability of a material to stretch 
or elongate.
Exothermic
A chemical reaction that produces heat.
Extender 
An economical material typically added  
to reduce costs in a sealant compound.
Extrudability
The level of ease or challenge involved 
in forcing a material through a narrow 
passage for application or shaping.
Face Glaze
A layer of glazing compound applied  
once the glass or insulated glass unit  
is in place.
Fatigue Failure 
Failure of a material due to rapid or 
prolonged cyclical deformation.
Filler 
A substance added to increase volume, 
inhibit sagging, enhance stickiness, 
unity, stretchability, and other properties 
within a sealing mixture.
Gasket 
A pliable material inserted between 
two surfaces to create a seal at their 
junction.
Gas Filled Units
Gas-filled insulating glass units, 
enhancing thermal and sound insulation.
Glazing 
Mounting glass within frames, sashes,  
and window walls.
Hardness
This metric gauges a material’s 
resilience to deformation, commonly 
expressed in “Shore A” units, and is 
evaluated with a durometer.
Heel Bead 
A strip of substance used to seal the 
area between the glass and frame.
Hermetically Sealed 
Two separate pieces of glass sealed 
with a gap of air in between, commonly 
known as Thermopane.
Hypalon 
A synthetic rubber-like material 
(an elastomer).
IGMA (Insulating Glass 
Manufacturer’s Alliance)
A voluntary organization comprising 
manufacturers of insulating glass units 
and suppliers of component materials 
used in these units.
Interface
The shared surface or boundary 
between two substances, such as the 
point where the insulating glass unit 
meets the channel.
Isotherm 
A graph showing how adsorption capacity 
changes with varying concentrations of 
adsorbate (water) at a constant temperature.
Kicker 
A catalyst initiates curing in a  
two-part material.
Lite
In glazing, “lite” refers to a piece of  
glass or unit.
