Neoprene
Synthetic rubber often used as a  
glazing setting block.
Nozzle
The nozzle or tip of a cartridge or 
dispenser gun used to apply sealant.
Oxidation
The process of oils drying when exposed 
to oxygen in the air.
Plasticizer
A substance that uses solvents to induce 
softening in a sealant or adhesive.
Polyisobutylene
Comprised solely of polyisobutylene 
rubber, this solid sealing agent is notable 
for its non-curing hydrocarbon elastomer 
makeup. Distinguished by a minimal 
moisture vapor transmission rate, it is 
ideal for serving as a dependable moisture 
barrier within insulated glass structures.
Polymer
The chemical compound formed when a 
monomer combines with itself, as seen 
in sealant compounds like Silicone and 
Polysulfide.
Polysulfide Rubber 
A synthetic polymer typically derived from 
Sodium Polysulfide, commonly used to 
create effective sealants.
Pot Life
The duration following the mixing process 
during which a sealant or adhesive can be 
correctly applied.
Primary Seal
In a dual-seal system, this is the seal 
immediately adjacent to the air space, 
often constituted by the PIB moisture 
barrier.
Primer 
Enhances bonding between the substrate 
and sealant, serving as an adhesive for 
various materials.
Putty
Air-drying glazing compounds, typically 
oil-based.
Relative Humidity (RH)
The relative humidity is the percentage of 
water vapor present in a specific volume of 
air at a particular temperature, compared 
to the maximum amount of water vapor 
that the air could hold at that temperature.
R. Values
R-values indicate a material’s resistance
to heat flow, with higher values indicating
better insulating capacity.
Sagging 
Sagging happens when a material lacks 
the strength to bear its own mass.
Sealant  
This elastomeric substance can 
accommodate over ±10% movement, 
endowed with adhesive and cohesive 
attributes to form a seal that resists 
moisture, air, and particulate intrusion.
Sealer 
A type of coating used to infill surface 
discrepancies such as cracks, pores,  
or cavities.
Secondary Blocks
Used to center lites or panels, maintain 
uniform sealant bead width, and prevent 
excess sealant distortion.
Shading Coefficient 
A measure of the degree to which solar 
energy is transmitted through a particular 
material.
Shear  
The reciprocal sliding motion between two 
surfaces affecting the sealant.
Shore A
A universal scale for evaluating the hardness 
of sealants, ranging from 1 to 100, where 
soft gum rubber scores between 5 to 10, and 
tire rubber typically falls between 70 to 80.
Shore Hardness
A measure of the firmness of a compound 
using a durometer hardness gauge.
