Stretch
Sealant elongation refers to its ability to 
stretch or become longer.
Substrate
The area upon which an adhesive or 
sealant is applied for attachment.
Sweat
Condensation resulting from the contact 
between warm, moist air and cold glass or 
metal.
Tear Strength
The force necessary to separate a sealant 
sample, measured in pounds.
Tensile Strength 
Cohesive strength, measured in psi 
(pounds per square inch), indicates a 
material’s resistance to stretching forces.
Thermal Back
A material with low thermal conductivity 
used to separate exterior and interior 
materials, creating a thermal break to 
prevent heat flow or transfer.
Thermal Conductance 
(C Value)
The C-value for heat conductance through 
a material thickness is calculated from its 
K-factor.
Thermal Conductance 
(K Factor)
Heat transfer per unit area over time in a 
homogeneous material is called heat flux. 
A lower value indicates lower conductivity.

Heat flux is the heat transfer per unit area 
over time in a homogeneous material. A 
lower value indicates lower conductivity.
Thermoplastic
A substance capable of being repeatedly 
softened through heating, thermoplastics 
typically exhibit minimal to no chemical 
cross-linking.
Thixotropic
Non-sag material that keeps its shape 
without drooping even on vertical 
surfaces during curing, thanks to 
thixotropy.
Toe Bead
A bead of sealant applied where the  
glass stop meets the horizontal frame  
for the lite.
Tooling 
To press material against the joint’s 
backing and surfaces for a polished 
appearance.
Ultraviolet Light (UV)
Segment of the light spectrum;  
UV rays can trigger chemical  
changes in rubber materials.
Unit
The term typically used to refer to  
a single “lite” of insulating glass.
Urethane 
Polymers with diverse flexibility, formed  
by diisocyanate and hydroxyl reactions.
U-Value
U-Values denote the comprehensive  
rate of heat transfer from interior to 
exterior air through a heat barrier.  
Lower values are indicative of enhanced 
insulation performance.
Viscosity
Viscosity measures a material’s resistance 
to flow. The higher the viscosity, the 
thicker and more thixotropic the material 
becomes in consistency.
Vulcanization
Enhancing rubber’s elasticity through 
vulcanization: treating with sulfur 
and heat.
Warm Edge Technology
“Warm Edge” refers to preventing 
condensation between the glass unit and 
the window frame.
Weeping
Extrusion or expulsion of solvents or oils.
Work Life
Work life refers to the duration during 
which a sealant can be readily applied 
after mixing, indicating the available 
working time.
